Cradle of Civilization, 2013 • 164 Main Street
“Cradle of Civilization consists of hand-broken stones laced onto a steel armature. The crescent reappears as the moon returns, as the cocoon sleeps nestled between two leaves. The cradle holds the entire history of our species, striated into epochs, our future dwindling towards extinction as all species must eventually expire. The natural order as we observe it. The euphoria of birth, the languish of middle age, the fear of lost repose as the universe unwinds; sleeping in the vastness, of the last frozen night.” TH
Tom Holmes is a sculptor working in stone, metal, wood, light, ice andwater. He works seasonally, tracking the weather. Different temperatures demand independent responses to materials and approaches. “Ice follows the freezing mark of winter, stone and steel the exterior work space of summer. Spring begins the search for materials and fall settles all debts, emotional, physical and intellectual.”
