Columbina • 477 Main • Howland Cultural Center
We are thrilled to have Sarah Haviland’s Columbina return to Beacon 3D! This year it is sited in front of the Howland Cultural Center at 477 Main Street. The artist states: “Columbina, meaning dove, is one in a series of human-headed bird-figures, made in reinforced cement after modeling in stryofoam and clay. The expression and pose of the female portrait with soft blue bird’s body – visiting the City of Beacon – suggest a poignant mystery and a mythic present. My current sculptures, large and small, explore human-avian personae, recalling mythological bird-figures relating to the soul. They are inspired by stories and images from many world cultures, as well as direct observation and subjective experience. Combining the familiar and the strange, and reflecting essential human desires, they raise questions about our relationship to nature and the anthropomorphic impulse.”
